Measuring to a ±0.5 mm tolerance: from carpentry to AI
From carpentry to AI

Measure twice, cut once

My father was a carpenter, and he taught me the groundwork for rolling out AI-driven processes.

“Measure twice, cut once.”

Back then it sounded like a trade saying; now I know it is a way of operating:

  • Measuring means understanding the problem before acting.
  • Cutting means deciding — and doing it once, properly.

In companies the cut almost never fails. What fails is that nobody measured first.

It is the same with AI: automating a process without ordering it first is cutting fast without having measured.

So, before bringing in AI:

  1. Measure: structure your data in a single, actionable system (e.g. smartpm.es). If you cannot measure it, you cannot automate it.
  2. Order: review and standardise the process before touching it.
  3. Prepare: train the team that will use it. Without people, there is no rollout.
  4. Cut: apply AI where there is already order, and measure the result.

AI does not fix a messy process. It multiplies it.
